Brown Toy Box is collaborating with partners and individual dream catalysts to expose 100,000 PreK-5th grade scholars to STEAM careers and activities through play-based learning. Brown Toy Box leverages educational toys, experiences and digital offerings to equip scholars to confidently explore STEAM activities.

When matched for social class, the gap in educational achievement between African Americans and other groups is substantial. African American children, on average, score lower on tests and are given lower grades than Asian, White, and Latino students. In adolescence, many of them fail courses and drop out of school. By 2050, there will no longer be a majority race. The diversifying U.S. population makes it clear that the key to America's future global competitiveness in STEM is engaging underrepresented populations at all stages of the educational pathway. Currently, there is a relatively low representation of underrepresented minorities in the STEM fields.
African Americans make up 13.2% of the U.S. population. Despite a representative sample of African Americans seen in other degree programs, they are exceedingly underrepresented in engineering. African Americans only represent 4% of engineering bachelor's degree recipients, 3.6% of the engineering workforce, and 2.6% of engineering faculty. *NACME
By 2053 the projected net worth for Blacks is $0. With lack of access, exposure, and opportunities to explore STEAM activities and later STEAM careers, Black children are being fast-tracked along the school to prison pipeline and locked into generational poverty.

YOU WERENT A STEAM MAJOR? YOU DIDN'T GO TO COLLEGE?
Doesn’t matter! You are your child’s most important and influential teacher. The most important thing is to try to always speak in the affirmative about learning, for your children, but also for you too. How many times have you heard adults say, “I’m not good at math.” That negative language sends a signal to your child that if they don’t understand something, they aren’t good at it.
They could very well be a genius at math or a concept they aren’t understanding, the key is to make simple, digestible and if possible, fun. We encourage parents to make ever challenge an opportunity for growth. You don’t need to be a genius, or a STEAM major, or a college graduate to be a STEAM advocate. You just need to be an adult in a child’s life that wants to ensure they have access to everything that you wished you had and everything you want for them.
